Serve Sangria This Spring and Summer

May 27, 2011

Sangria is a delicious mixture of wine, liquor, soda and fruit that originated on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula and is historically associated with Spain.  Sangria has since been modified and adapted by many cultures around the world and tailored to regional tastes and preferences.

Sangria is similar to an alcoholic fruit punch that is chilled in a refrigerator for up to 48 hours to allow the flavors to come together.

This festive beverage is made with light, dry and an inexpensive wine, usually a red wine. Popular red wines used to make sangria are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz or a Zinfandel. Have two half empty bottles after a dinner party? You can use combination’s of these wines in a single pitcher.

White wine sangria is another delicious option, though not as common. Try a Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, or Chardonnay in these mixtures.

Sangria has grown in popularity in the United States because it is simple to prepare, is pleasant to drink and you can make enough for the party without breaking the bank.

What makes sangria unique from a simple glass of wine is the fruit. Sangria can be altered and uniquely crafted based on taste or even what you have available in your kitchen. The most common fruits added are slices of lemon, limes and oranges, grapes, strawberries and peaches. But you can’t go wrong with apples, cranberries, watermelon, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi, mangos or anything else that sounds delicious.

A shot of brandy or rum is often added to the mixture as well. Sugar is added for extra sweetness. In the United States it is popular to add club soda or sugary drinks like ginger ale, lemonade or a lemon-lime soda as well.

The idea is simply to find or create a recipe that is made of the fruits and beverages you and your guests will enjoy.
