Indianapolis, January 24, 2012---Marsh Supermarkets announced today that it plans to build a state-of-the-art grocery store at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Senate Street in Indianapolis. The new downtown store will create 125 jobs and provide metropolitan residents and commuters with a convenient, high-quality grocer.

“Our customers tell us they want convenience, outstanding service and a wide variety of high-quality choices when choosing a supermarket,” said Joe Kelley, chairman, CEO and president of Marsh Supermarkets, Inc. “We are listening and designing our new downtown store to offer Marsh customers the very best urban grocery shopping experience possible.”

The 40,000 square-foot store will feature top-quality meats and seafood; fresh produce, including organic and locally-grown selections; an extensive deli with gourmet cheeses; a bakery with fresh-baked breads, cakes and pastries; and a wide selection of beer and wine, including labels from local brew masters and vintners.

The new Marsh store will feature staff specialists that cater to customers’ needs and preferences, including meat professionals who will custom cut meats to shoppers’ specifications. The Marsh team also will include bakers; seafood, wine, and cheese experts; and floral designers—all dedicated to providing tailored customer service.

The new grocery also will provide products and services to address customers’ nutritional interests and health needs, including a wide selection of gluten-free products and a full-service pharmacy.

To provide downtown residents, students, and workers with ease and convenience, the new Marsh store will offer, an extensive salad bar and other prepared meals, including rotisserie chicken, ribs, turkey and other ready-to-eat items that may be purchased for carryout or enjoyed in the store’s mezzanine-level dining area.

In 2011, Marsh Supermarkets celebrated 80 years of serving as Indiana’s hometown grocer. The company marked this milestone by announcing an investment of more than $60 million over three years in local communities through new store construction and remodeling current stores. Marsh also plans to expand into new markets.

The new store announced today will create 125 new jobs and is the company’s second store in downtown Indianapolis. The first, located at 320 North New Jersey Street, opened in 1986.

“Our store on North New Jersey Street has been a great success and continues to enjoy tremendous support from downtown customers. Even so, we believe the downtown area is an underserved market and will clearly support a second Marsh store,” added Kelley. “Downtown residents, workers who commute to downtown jobs, and students from local university campuses want and need another full-service, upscale grocery store that is convenient and accessible.  We are designing our new store to meet those needs.”

The new store is expected to be completed and serving customers during the summer of 2013.
