Apple cider is the hot trend in beer, with sales now more than $100 million a year. So it’s no surprise that plenty of breweries are jumping on the band wagon.
New cider offerings are rushing into the market from big players. Stella Artois is offering Cidre, a Belgian hard cider. Boston Brewing Company, which has had major success with the Sam Adams brand, has launched a new brand, Angry Orchard, which will compete against Sam Adams Hardcore Cider. Two other new labels are Smith & Forge Hard Cider from Miller/Coors and Johnny Appleseed Cider from Anheuser-Busch.
Another big trend for breweries are the seasonal beers. In spring, and even more so in summer, these are becoming downright playful. One of the breakthrough beers that launched seasonal fun a few years ago was Summer Shandy from Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. This blend of beer and lemonade was an instant megahit. Now the seasons are awash in specialty beers.
This year, the store shelves will be filled with Big Eddy and Orange Shandy from Leinenkugel, Valencia Grove Amber from Blue Moon Brewing Company and Ruthless Rye from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.
You can assemble your own six-packs at Marsh Supermarkets. Look for a huge selection of single beers from a range breweries, from majors to national craft beers to locals.
