Sweet and Salty Party Mix

This recipe makes a heap of snacking mix with appeal for all ages. The caramel-like syrup forms a crisp coating on the bite-size ingredients, giving it irresistible crunch and good keeping quality.

  1. Preheat oven to 375° F. Spray a large roasting pan with nonstick cooking spray. Combine cereals, Melba toast, pretzels and nuts in roasting pan. Set aside.
  2. In a 2-quart heavy saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, corn syrup and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches a full boil. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and baking soda. Pour syrup over cereal mixture in pan; toss to coat.
  3. Divide the mixture between among baking sheets lined with aluminum foil. Bake 15 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes, or until coating is set. Remove from oven; stir. Allow to cool.
  4. Transfer mixture to a storage container with a tight-fitting lid and stir in chocolate pieces. Store up to 1 week.
